The Garden on the Hilltop

Living a nourished life - growing veggies and fruit for my small family on a danish island.

When I get old……I want REAL food

By Henriette

Well I have been too busy lately
- almost had no computer time or time for my family or garden -sadly.

I have started to work in the afternoon/late evening. I work at a Dementia Unit - and that has really made be consider old age and good nourishing food.
Most of the old people has been sick for several years - they range in age from 70- 90 years. They get so many pills including almost all of them statins :-(

All of them lacks vitamin D - since they don´t go out much.

Food….
well I am supposed to eat dinner with them - but I really find it hard to do so since food is so bad.

Breakfast:
coffee with no fat milk, yoghurt with sugar/jam, white wheat bread with butter-spread ( butter with canola oil in) maybe juice.
snack: coffee with no fat milk, maybe a cookie

lunch: rye-bread with butter-like spread, and lots of pork ( sausages, ham etc. ) maybe egg, sometimes fish. juice-drink with sugar or more often with artificial sweetener.

snack; coffee with no fat milk , juice-drink with sugar or more often with artificial sweetener, some kind of cake…

dinner: Potatoes every single day ( always boiled sometime mashed with margarine and no fat milk, almost always pork but it could be chicken as well- some kind of gravy made from powder, sometimes but only rarely veggies. juice-drink with sugar or more often with artificial sweetener

late evening:
more coffee with no fat milk , sometimes white bread with cheese sometimes some kind of dessert, like stewed fruit or rice-pudding(made with low fat milk etc…..

Where do any of you see the nutritious food ???

First of all the quality of the food is not great … we are talking anti organic food - cheapest products etc……

I miss full fat dairy products, real butter- eggs, fish, veggies and fresh fruit and a variety of meat - I would go crazy without good quality of bread or soaked grains
- The gravies and soups could be great IF they were made from real bones….

I really dont want to get old on one of these old peoples homes…

Hopefully my sweet daughter will cook for me then :-)

  1. Hi henriette,

This type f ood reminds me of what they serve in our hospitals to the very sick people who are supposed to be trying to recover! Its ridiculous really. My mum is a nurse so I spent several hours after school hanging out at the hospital as a child, and I was always so shocked by the teribble stodge that was always served up, even before i knew any better!

Its motivation to stay out of hospital and take responsibility for our own health :)
